In search of their missing N24 million Community fund, the Mmaku Community in Awgu LGA says it’s waiting for both the EFCC, ICPC and Enugu State Government to recover their money.
The Community through its leaders had petitioned the anti fraud agencies to recover the Community’s N24 million allegedly hijacked by member of Enugu Assembly Hon Johnson Chukwuobasi.
The money was a grant by the Enugu State Government for the upgrading of the Community Cottage Hospital.
As part of efforts to stop the alleged embezzlement of the money the community said it wrote to the Fidelity Bank Rangers Avenue, Enugu to stop the crime.
In a letter made available to the media and addressed to the Regional Manager, the community demanded to place on hold the account number 5700041332.
The letter was titled ‘Demand to place on hold account known as Mmaku Development with Account No 5700041332.
The letter read: “we write this letter on behalf of the people of Mmaku, made up of Agunese autonomous Community, Mmaku Ugwu and Mmaku Agbo autonomous Communities.
“Each of these Communities has its traditional rulers and Presidents General of the Development Union.
“However, given that Mmaku has always been one indivisible Community, and to ensure that our people did not forget what binds us together, the leadership of these Communities came together and registered an umbrella body under the name Federated Mmaku Town Union.
“Sir, the President General of each autonomous Community and the traditional ruler are their representatives.
“It has come to our knowledge that account was opened with your bank by some persons, though of Mmaku extraction, who have no authority to represent any of the three Autonomous Communities.
“We are aware that it is required of every bank to observe KYC before opening any account for a community. We wonder what documents the people presented to your bank that empowered it to open the named account without the PG’s and traditional rulers as signatories.
“The account was supplied to the Government of Enugu State where it paid in the sum of N24 million which the Governor released to our people for the revitalization of the Cottage Hospital in our community.
“As we write this letter those who opened the account are yet to inform the leadership of any of the three Autonomous Communities of the existence of this account and that the promised money has been lodged into the account.
“It is against this backdrop that we demand that you put on hold the operation of the siad account and ensure that no money is removed from the account until the people are informed of the said account and the authorized representatives of the Communities are made signatories to the account.
“Plesae be informed that except the leadership of Mmaku authorizes the withdrawal of any money from that account, none should be released to anyone.”
The letter dated February 1, 2021 was signed by Sir Laz Udeogboke-PG Agunese, Eddy Ilechukwu-PG Mmaku Ugwu and Dr. Magnus Ugwa Chairman, Caretaker Committee, Mmaku Agbo.
