Festus Egwarewa Adeniyi Keyamo, a Nigerian lawyer, a Senior Advocate of Nigeria SAN, critic, columnist, human rights activist and the Federal Minister of State for Labour and Employment of Nigeria has said that the All Progressives Congress’s victory in the 2015 presidential election was not as a result of President Muhammadu Buhari being a Northerner.

Festus Keyamo said that the People’s Democratic Party is desperate to hang the tag of “North” on just anyone so as to win the 2023 presidential election.

According to him, the opposing party believes that the ruling party won the general election in 2015, simply because Buhari was a Northerner.

Many people believe that most of the votes come from the North. Some people have also asserted that the North has about 70% of the votes that come during general election.

In as much as this is debatable, the Federal Minister of State for Labour and Employment of Nigeria has said that this is the reason why the opposing party was so desperate to present a Northerner, believing that they will gather majority of the votes from the North and eventually win the election.

However, Festus Keyamo has made it clear to the opposing party that the ruling party’s victory in 2015 has nothing to do with where president Buhari was coming from.

According to him, the People’s Democratic Party will soon “painfully” realise that the All Progressives Congress’s victory in 2015 was because of an additional “Buhari effect”, and not because he was a Northerner.

Festus Keyamo implied that region plays little or no role in determining who will win an election. To him, that the People’s Democratic Party has chosen a Northerner as its presidential candidate does not mean that they will eventually win the election.
