…Environmental health officers would help to checkmate inhumane attitudes to the environment

In order to achieve a liveable, lovable and prosperous homeland in accordance with the mandate of the Professor Chukwuma Charles Soludo led administration in Anambra state, Dunukofia local government area has commenced waste evacuation from markets and households so as to realise a clean healthy environment for all and sundry.
This bold and courageous step to achieve environmental cleanliness in Dunukofia was taken when the transition committee chairman Hon. Onyemaobi Augustine Chukwunonyelum inaugurated the Dunukofia chapter of the Anambra State Waste Management Agency (ASWAMA) at the council headquarters Ukpo.
Onyemaobi said the committee in charge of waste management was inaugurated in accordance with the directives of Mr. Governor whom he said had earlier inaugurated as well as mandated them to go down to the grassroots to spread the message of the solution team which he said includes the realisation of a clean and serene environment devoid of degradations.
He said as the TC chairman he was the Chairman of the Waste Management Committee and at the ward level, the Councilors were the Chairmen of the Waste Management Committees, adding that the vigilantes, presidents-general, community-based organisations and environmental officers were part of the ward committees for waste management in the area.
The TC chairman noted that the contractor handling waste in Dunukofia has started evacuating waste in the council area; that henceforth a clean healthy environment is expected at the ward level. He equally stated that the continuous clean up exercise was anchored on removal of dump sites constituting public health hazards while households would bag their waste in readiness for collection by the contractor.
According to him, the contractor would come for waste collection twice in a week everywhere in Dunukofia and about four times in a week where there are bigger challenges. He was however of the opinion that Dunukofia would be one of the earliest local governments to inaugurate waste management committee at the grassroots as he believes that a clean environment was necessary to achieve a liveable, lovable and prosperous homeland .
Meanwhile Mr. Kenechukwu Nnamso the Managing Director Megatron Global Services Limited, who is the contractor handling waste collection in Dunukofia local government area, said the people were compliant especially at Afor-Igwe market in Umudioka. He said he has evacuated waste in Ukpo, Umunnachi, Ukwulu and Nawgu respectively, adding that the intention was to make Dunukofia cleaner, brighter and better for habitation.
Moreso, the Supervisory Councilor for Health and Environmental Sanitation and Councilor representing Ukpo ward 3 Hon. Chibuzo Amadu, thanked Governor Soludo for ensuring that all the local governments in the state would be clean and tidy. He said they were ready for work and they would go to the villages to sensitise the people on proper waste disposal.
Mrs. Ifeoma Eucharia Okonkwo, the Head of Department Environment and Sanitation Dunukofia local government area, said environmental health officers would help to checkmate inhumane attitudes to the environment. She said they would help to ensure that people don’t dump waste along the roads and in the gutters.
