PDP Crises: An Avenue For The Emergence Of Third Force In 2023 Presidential Election In Nigeria - Oluwadara T. Akingbohungbe

Mark.3.25 And if a house be divided against itself, that house cannot stand.

The crises befalling PDP is a scenario of a house divided against itself, such a house according to the Holy Book of Christians, can not stand.

Let’s examine the crises befalling the Opposition political party in Nigeria which is the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP.

On Sunday October 31st, 2021, Former President of the Nigerian Senate in the third republic, 1992-1993, Iyorchia Ayu emerges as the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP National Chairman at the convention. Iyorchia Ayu happens to be a northerner from Gboko Town in Benue State of North Central Nigeria.

One of the Campaign Promises of Iyorchia Ayu during his party Chairmanship Electioneering as reemphasize by one of the stakeholders of PDP, Bode George, was that, Iyorchia Ayu promises to resign if a Northerner emerges as PDP Presidential Candidate in order to give room for the Southerners to have a stake in the party.

As a matter of fact, on Saturday, 28th May 2022, Atiku Abubakar, Former vice president of Nigeria emerges as the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP Presidential flag bearer in the forth coming 2023 Presidential Election in Nigeria. Atiku hails from Jada, a town and Local Government Area of Adamawa State, Northern Nigeria.

With the emergence of Atiku Abubakar, a Northerner as the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP flag bearer for the 2023 Presidential Election in Nigeria, it is expedient for Iyorchia Ayu to honour his word of resigning as the Party’s National Chairman as stated by the party’s Chieftain, Bode George on Thursday.

The Party stakeholders in the Southern part of the Nation and the entire leadership are clamouring for non marginalisation of the Southern Identity in the Party Within the Nigeria Federal Character principle, whereby each geo political zone must be duly represented in appointment and selection into strategic position within the Nigeria Nation.

The Crises and call for resignation of the Party’s National Chairman, Iyorchia Ayu is a way of fighting for the Party’s victory in the 2023 General Election in Nigeria, because as the lifting of ban on Campaign draws near, it will be a shot in the leg for the party to present themselves to the wise Nigerian electorate with the Party’s National Chairman as Northerner while the presidential flag bearer is also a Northerner.

With the current emergence of Peter Obi, the Labour Party Presidential flag bearer in the 2023 Presidential Election in Nigeria as the Winner in the Online Opinion Pool conducted by Atedo N. A. Peterside Foundation (ANAP Foundation), if the crises in PDP deepens and urgent attention is not taken to address the issue, the third Force will be given the pass code for Victory in the forth coming 2023 Presidential Election.

If PDP is interested in winning Election in Nigeria, there should be a consesus in the election of a New National Chairman from the Southern part of Nigeria to balance the Equation.
