A former PDP chieftain and a prominent politician in Bayelsa state, Matthew Barango, has explained why he left the party to support the Obidient movement ahead of next year’s election. Speaking on AIT News, Matthew discussed how he was a staunch supporter of Goodluck Jonathan and how he sympathizes with the governor of Rivers State.
Addressing the topic, Barango said, “I was a member of the PDP until the presidential primary election involving Governor Wike. I publicly resigned from the party. Yes, Wike has remained in the PDP, but I have my personal reasons. Firstly, Tambuwal and other leaders had previously left the PDP and worked against the party. Secondly, the southern governors had agreed that the south must produce the next president, but the same group took the presidential ticket. I see it as an injustice to Wike, who has worked tirelessly to build the PDP when the party needed people the most.
He continued, “My interest in the Obidient movement can not be disconnected from what happened to Governor Wike. Among all the PDP presidential aspirants, we think that Governor Wike is the man that can do the job from the South-South. Rivers State and Bayelsa State are closely related, and I can not tolerate what they did to Governor Wike the same way they did something similar to my godfather, Goodluck. I decided to resign from the party rather than witness the issue.
