George Moghalu: Reforming NIWA @60


It is on record that the current Managing Director, Chief Executive Officer MD/CEO, National Inland Water Ways Authority NIWA Dr (Chief) George N. Moghalu was known for leaving a lasting legacies and unique records in all his endeavors, be it in politics, administrative sphere , having garnered quantum experiences in all areas which included as a technocrat and bureaucrat.

All these he had done convincingly in all areas to improve the alternative way of water transportation both in commercial and other spheres, that has become a national discourse in the last few years at the mantle of leadership in NIWA.

Aside boosting the morale of staffers of the agency through prompt remunerations, promotions, provision of needed items and requirements as well as impetus that will facilitate job execution, Moghalu filled the existing vacancies through a decent process of engagement that had promoted good work ethics, encouraged performance and job satisfaction in the new NIWA.

Appointed over two years ago, after the elevation of the former Managing Director, Senator Olorunnibe Mamora to a Minister of the federal republic, that kick-started a major reforms in all areas of the agency.

On assumption of duty , he approached and reduced the growing waterways accidents to the barest minimum through advocacy, awareness, clearing of water hyacinth that discouraged Nigerians from patronizing water transportation as alternative mode of movement from one end to the other in the country.

But, in an unavoidable circumstances, the NIWA helmsman has put in place arrangements to rescue victims through provision of boats and ferries, as well as enabling environment to redress the situation prevalent during the rainy season and floodings.

The policy thrust of Moghalu was also extended to synergy and collaboration with critical stakeholders in the sector, that ensured seamless policy execution towards changing the narratives of water transportation in Nigeria among many others.

The opening up of Onitsha port had attracted more economic activities in the Southern part of Nigeria, with high concentration in businesses and commercial activities.

Plans are also in the offing to open up more ports and also ensured the maximum use of other existing ports to attract more Internally generated revenues not only to the agency , but federal coffers including safe navigation.

The effective and efficient management of NIWA since his assumption of duty heralded a new phase of innovations across the agency, not only for a safe waterways but along with other incentives during emergencies.

As you mark your 6th decade on the surface of the earth, no doubt your continuous positive contributions to waterways transportation among many others remain indelible on the sands of time and a reference point.
