Former House of Representatives member, Hon. Afam Ogene, has said that only an atmosphere of peace across the nation, diligence and objectivity in leadership selection process, would guarantee meaningful development in Nigeria in the new year and beyond.
Hon. Ogene charged everyone, irrespective of ethnic, political or social backgrounds, to take the issues of insecurity and violent crimes seriously, as a collective scourge that must be confronted and defeated with patriotic unison for the overall good of the society.
Ogene, who is also the Labour Party House of Representatives candidate for Ogbaru Federal Constituency of Anambra State, made this call in a new year message, in Awka, capital city of Anambra.
According to him, Nigeria is in a cross road and the 2023 general elections, present a great opportunity for leadership rejigging, reinvigoration and redirection that would lead to a potential restoration of the nation on the path of progress and honour.
But that, he said, would only be possible if Nigerians – both leaders and followers – would be more pragmatic, patriotic and committed in the resolve to decisively say no to agents of disaffection and destruction, in the coming days, so as to ensure peaceful elections and outcomes that would be reflective of the will of the people.
He urged his constituents and Nigerians to vote for him and the presidential candidate of Labour Party, Mr. Peter Obi to largely salvage the country.
The statement read in part: “I see hope. It is the outset of a new dawn for our dear nation. This year, 2023 is the year of liberty for Nigeria and Nigerians. Say goodbye to lack and economic hardships. We have suffered enough and this shouldn’t continue in 2023. It’s a blessed year and I urge my constituents in Ogbaru and Nigerians at large to keep hope alive.
“In recent times, Nigeria has witnessed a sustained nosedive in different aspects, that many are now desirous of a speedy reversal of fortune, thereby making this year, 2023, a very significant one, with the coming elections.
“And we must not allow this fortuitous opportunity of playing our parts in recovery and reinvention of our nation to pass us bye without standing to be counted, in our individual or collective efforts, to get it right.
“We must do this by being self accountable in our individual actions and choices. And also by exhibition of uncompromised sound judgment that would put the interest of the people and survival of the nation above any other sectional or parochial interest.
“In all we do, we need peace. And in all we desire, we need pragmatism and sound judgement. To get it right, we must behave right. Choose right. Vote right. Lead right. And right the wrongs, for the good of our people.
“May 2023 be a year of right decisions. And right results, for us as individuals and for Nigeria, as a nation. Happy New Year! “
