Airfare rises by 95.01 percent in one year – NBS

The National Bureau of Statistics (NBS) has said average passenger airfare increased from N38,253.36 in December 2021 to N74,597.30 in December 2022.
According to its document titled: “Fare

 Watch for December 2022,” the airfare rose by 1.81% from in November 2022 of  N73,267.57 to N74,597.30 in December 2022.




The document said in the period under review “In air travels fare, the average fare paid by air passengers for specified routes single journey, increased by 1.81% on a month-on-month from N73,267.57 in November 2022 to N74,597.30 in December 2022.

” On a year-on-year, the fare rose by 95.01% from N38,253.36 in December 2021.”

NBS explained that this report shows Transport Fare Watch for December 2022 covering the following categories: bus journey within the city per drop constant route; bus journey intercity (state route) charge per person; air fare charge for specified routes single journey; journey by motorcycle (Okada) per drop; and water way passenger transport.

It added that the average fare paid by commuters for bus journeys within the city per drop increased by 1.19% in December 2022 on a month-on-month from N637.10 in November 2022 to N644.66.

The NBS said while on a year-on-year, however, the average fare paid by commuters for bus journeys within the city per drop rose by 36.92% from N470.83 in December 2021. 

The Bureau noted that in another category, the average fare paid by commuters for bus journey intercity per drop rose to N3,975.14 in December 2022 indicating an increase of 3.29% on a month-on-month compared to the value of N3,848.48 in November 2022. On a year-on-year, the fare prices rose by 42.74% from N2,784.92 in December 2021.
