Popular Islamic cleric, Sheikh Ahmad Gumi, has said that he does not think there is any tribe that has intermarried with other tribes than the Fulani tribe. He said that if you go to the South-East, you would see Igbo people that speak Fulani language, and that he has also seen a Fulani person who speaks Igbo language.
He said that there are two types of Fulani. He said there is the Fulani who are herdsmen. He said that these Fulani people inherited cattle, and that some of them would tell you that they inherited the cattle about five generations ago, and that they have refused to educate themselves, and cattle is their only capital. He added that there are Fulani all over the town.
He said – “In fact, I don’t think there’s any tribe that has intermarried with other tribes than the Fulani. If you go to the East, you will see a Fulani-speaking Igbo, I have seen a Fulani who speaks Igbo. I have seen a Fulani who was speaking Yoruba.”
Speaking further, he said that even in the Hausa areas, a lot of the people around there are Fulani, which is why the word “Hausa/Fulani” came about. He added that there are Fulani people that turned into Hausa.
He said this while talking about how the Fulani herdsmen formed part of the criminal elements terrorizing Nigeria. He said that Fulani herdsmen see everyone living in the rural areas as part of those cheating them.
He said that the herdsmen are fighting anybody, whether you are Fulani or not, and that once you are a town dweller, they would fight you.
