Manchester United have won their first trophy under Erik ten Hag thanks to a 2-0 win over Newcastle United in the Carabao Cup final. First half goals from Casemiro and Marcus Rashford were enough for the Red Devils at Wembley Stadium, besting a Newcastle side who were competing in their first cup final this century.
Casemiro opened the scoring just after the half-hour mark and their lead was doubled a few minutes later when Marcus Rashford’s shot deflected in off Sven Botman. Eddie Howe’s Magpies, whose 67-year wait for a major trophy goes on, had little response, with nothing more than a sizeable chunk of second half possession to show for what was an incredibly anticlimactic afternoon. The win for Erik ten Hag’s men sees the Dutchman cap off a truly fabulous mid-season turnaround, after seemingly struggling to find his feet during the opening few months of his reign at Old Trafford.
Erik ten Hag spent time after the game with legendary boss Sir Alex Ferguson. The Scotsman was at Wembley to watch the final and was waiting in the tunnel after the game to congratulate the current boss. The pair posed together afterwards with the Carabao Cup trophy. Ten Hag enjoyed dinner with Sir Alex Ferguson last week and said the former boss had given him some valuable advice. He has followed this up with a win against Barcelona and a victory at Wembley, making it a real week to remember.
