Professor Okey Ikechukwu has come out to say that the issue of Tinubu’s eligibility that the Labour Party included in their petition in court might not be enough grounds to nullify Tinubu’s victory at the 2023 presidential elections.
According to Prof. Okey who appeared in an interview on Arise Tv last night, Tinubu’s lawyers are banking on the fact that INEC will not withdraw the certificate it case Tinubu to contest for the election and for Peter Obi’s lawyers who plan to challenge Tinubu’s eligibility in court, that is very challenging. He did note that Labour Party’s lawyers are very intelligent and it will be interesting to see how this pans out.
“I am not entirely convinced that the question of eligibility is a strong enough grounds for their petition, there is very strong moral component in that argument. They are talking about character, that everything connected to this individual is questionable. According to National justice, equity and good conscience, if these facts are true, and some processes have led to these people ignoring it, we don’t think it will work. But when you consider things like only WAEC can revoke your certificate, only a University council can revoke your certificate.”
“And if you have been working in a place for 5 years and someone raises a question about your certificate, as long as the University does not invalidate your certificate, you’d still be on the staff list. Now Tinubu’s people are not dull, that’s what they are banking on. How that will be successfully challenged in court is yet to be seen because Labour Party’s lawyers are very intelligent.”
