Amid the reports currently making the rounds that a faction of the Labour Party is making efforts to withdraw the petition filed by Peter Gregory Obi challenging the outcome of the February 25 presidential polls, veteran journalist, and public affairs commentator, Jimi Disu has come out to give a reason why Nigerians must not allow the case to truncated before going to full trial.
Speaking during an interview on Nigeria Info FM’s ‘Dailies Today’ program on Wednesday morning, Disu argued that the case no longer belongs to Obi alone but to Nigerians as a whole because the judgments that will be given on some of the contents in the petition will bring clarity to the country’s electoral processes in the future.
He said; “The ongoing fight in the Labour Party is a dirty one, and I think there has been some compromise along the line. It is part of the game called politics where you infiltrate your enemy’s camp and try to distract them. But I don’t think they will succeed in withdrawing the case, I hope not. Because those involved in the petition need to know that this case is for Nigeria. It has now gone beyond Obi or Tinubu.
This is a very crucial case because the end results are very decisive to the country’s electoral future. So, I would advise that nobody tampers with that case in all honesty. This petition has been beyond whether Tinubu or Obi becomes president because it will settle a lot of issues bordering on legal interpretations of certain aspects of our electoral laws. And it will also bring calm to the country. I want to plead with the Labour Party faction to put Nigeria first in their dealings. Imaging how the public will react if it succeeds in withdrawing the case.”
