Why Security Challenges Persist In Niger – Gov Bago

Niger State governor Mohammed Umaru Bago has advanced reasons for the protracted security challenges in the state and attributed it to many ungoverned spaces.

He said because of the large landmass of the state, there are so many ungoverned spaces that the perpetrators of crime are using as an advantage to unleash terror.

The governor however told the new assistant inspector-general of police (AIG) zone 7 who visited him that his administration has resolved to end the festering security challenges.

Bago told the police chief that his administration was ready to partner with the Nigeria Police Force to secure its vast arable land.

He said, “Because of the vast expanse of land the state was blessed with, criminals have taken advantage of the ungoverned spaces to launch their nefarious activities.”

Consequently, the governor said his administration would create a Ministry of Pastoral and Nomadic Affairs to work towards securing the forests and ungoverned spaces using the inhabitants of the areas to enable farmers and nomads return to their farmlands.

Earlier, Adebowale Williams said the zone covered the FCT and Niger State and commended the governor for the “unique, uncommon and strategic security interventions the state government was providing to enable the police perform their mandatory duty.”
