Bruno Fernandes, the captain of Manchester United, has explained why he opted not to take a penalty in their 3-0 victory over Everton.
Prior to the penalty incident, the Red Devils had already secured the lead with an incredible goal from Alejandro Garnacho.
In the late stages of the match, Anthony Martial scored the third goal, but it was the second goal that raised some questions. The penalty was given after VAR ruled that Ashley Young had fouled Martial in the box.
Despite being the regular penalty taker, Fernandes decided to hand the ball to Rashford.
Rashford confidently struck the ball past Jordan Pickford to secure his second goal of the season.
Explaining his decision, Fernandes told Sky Sports: “Because Marcus needed a bit of confidence, he needed his goal.
“He is an excellent penalty taker. I was sure he could score that penalty and Marcus did it perfectly.
“I think obviously strikers and wingers need to score goals, it is part of their game. Marcus was unstoppable and he could take on everybody.”
