Ohanaeze Acknowledges Igbos’ Role in Ongoing Demolition Exercises in Lagos

Ohanaeze

Ohanaeze Ndigbo, the apex Igbo socio-cultural organization, recognizes the unfortunate situation faced by Igbo residents in Lagos due to the ongoing demolition exercises. The recent events have prompted a reflection on the forewarnings issued by our legendary icon, Dim Chukwuemeka Odumegwu Ojukwu, regarding the potential consequences of Igbos investing in another man’s land and abandoning their homeland for Lagos, and flouting the Ojukwu”s warnings had led to huge loss of properties and investments.

Ohanaeze Ndigbo firmly believes that in every adversity lies an opportunity for redress and growth. While we empathize with the affected Igbo residents, we acknowledge that their refusal to heed Ojukwu’s forewarnings has contributed to their current misfortunes. It is crucial to learn from these mistakes and take proactive measures to prevent reoccurrences in the future.

In light of this, Ohanaeze Ndigbo reiterates its position that we will not engage in a confrontation with the Lagos State Governor, Mr. Sonwu Olu, over the ongoing demolition of properties owned by a majority of Igbo residents. We understand that the Lagos government has legitimate reasons for carrying out these actions and that they are within the framework of legislation.

Instead, Ohanaeze Ndigbo encourages Igbos to seize this moment as an opportunity to reassess their investments and consider relocating them to the Eastern region. Our vibrant cities such as Aba, Abakiliki, and Onitsha offer immense potential for growth and development. By investing and building international markets in these areas, we can create prosperous economic hubs that will benefit not only the Igbo people but also contribute to the overall development of Nigeria.
