Theresa Cachuela, a 33-year-old Hawaiian social media influencer and owner of House of Glam Hawaii LLC, was shot and killed by her estranged husband, Jason Cachuela, aged 44, in a murder-suicide incident. The shooting took place in the Pearlridge Center parking lot in Honolulu on a Friday morning. Their youngest daughter, between 6 and 8 years old, witnessed the event. Jason Cachuela shot himself shortly after fleeing the scene in a gray Mazda.
The couple was involved in a tumultuous relationship marked by ongoing disputes. Theresa Cachuela had recently obtained a temporary restraining order (TRO) against Jason, following threats of suicide and violence. Jason had threatened to commit suicide in front of Theresa and had previously held a knife to her neck. Theresa had filed for divorce due to ongoing harassment and stalking by Jason.
Authorities, investigating the case as a first-degree murder-suicide, had previously served Jason Cachuela with a TRO and recovered five registered firearms from him. The incident highlights significant challenges faced by victims of domestic violence. Theresa Cachuela’s family, particularly her mother Lucita Ani-Nihoa, expressed that the system failed to protect her despite her multiple attempts to seek help from the police about the threats and violence she faced from Jason.
The community has been deeply affected by this incident, mourning the loss of Theresa Cachuela and rallying to support her family. A GoFundMe page was set up to help cover funeral expenses. Theresa and Jason Cachuela leave behind five children – two boys, ages 18 and 15, and three girls, ages 20, 13, and 8. The youngest daughter, who witnessed the shooting, is said to be deeply traumatized by the experience.
