An unknown boat carrying multiple individuals, including women and children, is believed to have capsized in the waters of the River Niger.
The tragic incident occurred early Sunday morning, with bystanders observed attempting to rescue the victims near the Onitsha banks.
A video of the incident has been circulating on social media.
Although the exact number of casualties remains uncertain, reports suggest that the passengers were traveling from Kogi State.
The Anambra State Police spokesperson, DSP Tochukwu Ikenga, verified the occurrence and assured that the situation is being handled.
Ikenga said, “The situation is under control. Our marine operatives, on getting the distress call about the incident, responded swiftly.
“We were able to rescue over 30 of the passengers alive and recovered the five lifeless bodies in the depths of the sea and the capsized boat.
“Preliminary information revealed that the boat was from Kogi State, conveying goods and passengers before the unfortunate incident occurred.
“Meanwhile, the cause is yet to be ascertained as the investigation is ongoing, please.”
