The Nasarawa State Independent Electoral Commission (NASIEC) has officially announced the indefinite postponement of the local government elections initially scheduled for August 31.

The commission’s chairman, Ayuba Usman Wandai, conveyed this decision in Lafia, the capital of Nasarawa State, citing ongoing court actions as the primary reason for the suspension.

Wandai, addressing members of the Inter-Party Advisory Council (IPAC) and the press, explained that the commission received a court summons from the Federal High Court in Lafia.

The summons pertained to a case filed by one Paul A. John and 12 others against the Nasarawa State House of Assembly and NASIEC.

Considering the legal proceedings and their potential impact on the successful conduct of the 2024 local government elections, the commission, in adherence to the law, postponed the exercise indefinitely.

Wandai mentioned that the commission has instructed its legal representatives to seek an accelerated hearing of the case to facilitate the resumption of normal election activities.
