The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has issued a stern warning to former Chairman of the National Human Rights Commission, Chidi Odinkalu, over his recent comments on the arrest of Nigerian crossdresser, Idris Okuneye, popularly known as Bobrisky.

In a press statement released by the Commission, the EFCC described Odinkalu’s remarks as “reckless” and “unbecoming of a former head of a major government agency.” Odinkalu had criticized the EFCC’s arrest of Bobrisky, labeling it as evidence of idleness or an abuse of power.

The EFCC emphasized that Bobrisky was arrested and arraigned on the basis of clear cases of abuse of the Naira, to which he has pleaded guilty. The Commission further stated that while Odinkalu has the right to free speech as a Nigerian, such a right should be exercised with decorum and responsibility.

The EFCC warned that it would not hesitate to take appropriate legal actions against such uncouth commentaries against its lawful mandate by anyone, and advised Odinkalu to ventilate his “rascally opinions” more responsibly in future situations.

Bobrisky’s arrest has sparked a heated debate on social media, with many Nigerians questioning the EFCC’s priorities in light of more pressing issues facing the country, such as the recent hike in electricity tariffs, corruption in government and the judiciary, and security challenges.

Odinkalu, in his defense of Bobrisky, argued that the real problems facing Nigeria, including the rigging of elections, looting of the treasury, and the rise of insurgent groups like Boko Haram and bandits, should be the focus of the public and the EFCC.’
