One Dead, Several Missing As Boat Carrying Over 35 People Capsizes on River Rima in Sokoto State

A boat carrying more than 35 people capsized on the River Rima along the Dundaye axis in Wamakko Local Government Area. One body has been recovered so far, while nearly 15 of the victims managed to reach the shore.

Officials from the National Emergency Management Agency’s (NEMA) Sokoto Operations Office, led by Head of Operations Aliyu Shehu Kafidangi, along with Nasiru Garba, Special Adviser to the Sokoto State Emergency Management Agency, and representatives from the Red Cross, have visited the scene to gather data on the victims.

According to some of the survivors and eyewitnesses, the canoe overturned due to overloading. The boat’s occupants, including the elderly, women, children, and youths, were crossing the river to reach their farms.

NEMA’s Search and Rescue Team, along with local divers, are currently searching for the missing persons.
