The Ogun State Government has denied owing the West African Examinations Council (WAEC) any debt, contrary to a report published by online platform, Platform Times.

In a statement released by the Commissioner for Education, Prof. Arigbabu, the government described the report as “fake news” and “egregious falsehood”.

The commissioner noted that the WAEC director in the state had already issued a statement confirming that Ogun State is not indebted to the examining body, and apologized for the embarrassment caused by the false report.

“We appreciate WAEC’s prompt reaction to this issue and urge parents and students in Ogun State, as well as the generality of Ogun citizens, to take note of this clarification,” Prof. Arigbabu said.

He also slammed Platform Times for publishing the false report without verifying its authenticity, saying it was “unfortunate that some online platforms have continued to peddle fake news to serve sinister ends”.
