Plateau State House of Assembly Passes PLASIEC Law 2024, Awaits Governor’s Assent

The Plateau State House of Assembly has passed PLASIEC Law 2024 into law after duely repealing the plateau state independent Electoral Commission PLASIEC Law 2016

This bill which passed 3rd reading before the floor of the house at plenary of Tuesday 27th August 2024 is now awaiting the ascention of the plateau state Governor Caleb Mutfwang

On plenary of Wednesday 21st this month,the bill for a law to repeal PLASIEC Law 2016 was committed to the House committee on Parastatals and world bank projects for scrutiny and legislative inputs.

Having completed the assignment, Chairman of the Committee Joseph Bukar Member representing Shendam state Constituency who is also the sponsor of the bill presented the report of the committee which was passed by the legislators after it was considered by the committee of the whole.

According to the sponsor Joseph Bukar the bill proposed to be intendem with the electoral act 2022 and provides ba legal framework for the general conduct of elections and guarantee credible elections in the State.

The bill also specified electoral officers to collate and announce election results at various stages of the local government elections as well as venue for the announcement of results of the Chairmanship and deputy positions which would be done at the local government headquarters.

Also at plenary, the legislators successfully amended the plateau state local government council law 2017 following a bill seeking its amendment.

The bill sponsored by Member representing Kanke State Constituency in the assembly Joseph Gokum sought to among other things reviewed some provisions of the 2017 Law including Vacation of seat by councillors, Tenure of office of the Chairman .

Also before the floor of the house was a bill for the law to provide for the establishment of the Plateau State Sports Commission 2024 sponsored by the member representing Mangu South State constituency Kwarpo Mathew Sylvanus

Matthew Kwarpo explained that the bill seeks to look into the sporting activities in the ministry of youth and sports development.

The 2nd reading of the bill will be in the next 2 weeks.
