A scathing critique of former Director-General of the State Security Service (SSS), Yusuf Magaji Bichi, has been made by Jafaar Jafaar, alleging that Bichi’s tenure turned the elite service into a “graveyard of career aspirations” and an “orchard of nepotism”.
According to Jafaar, Bichi lowered recruitment standards, removed multi-layer screening processes, and recruited unqualified personnel, including those who couldn’t pass basic aptitude tests. He also accused Bichi of extending the tenure of favored directors, stifling the ambitions of aspiring directors, and allowing his family members to influence recruitment, promotion, and discipline within the service.
Jafaar further alleged that Bichi’s wife and son misused public funds, with his wife moving around in a long motorcade with dozens of armed personnel, harassing motorists, and his son displaying a fleet of luxury cars on social media, guarded by SSS operatives at public expense.
The new DG of SSS has been urged to review detainee cases, restore professionalism, and keep his family away from meddling in the service’s affairs. Jafaar called for a “factory reset” and even “flushing” of the service to restore its elite reputation.
