The National Association of University Students has called on the National Universities Commission (NUC) to intervene in the ongoing crisis surrounding the registration of Science Laboratory Technology (SLT) graduates for the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) program.
According to reports, the NYSC has begun enforcing a new policy requiring SLT graduates to obtain a license from the Nigerian Institute of Science Laboratory Technology (NISLT) before registering for the program. This sudden change has left many graduates stranded at NYSC orientation camps, unable to proceed with registration.
The students’ association has urged the NUC to suspend the enforcement of this policy, citing the lack of clear communication and the unnecessary hardship it has caused for graduates.
“We request that the NUC engage with the NYSC and NISLT to suspend the enforcement of this policy,” said Comr. OLADIPUPO Michael Oluwatosin, Chairman of the National Association of University Students. “We also ask that the NUC ensure that all stakeholders are properly informed of any future requirements that may impact graduates, providing sufficient notice to prevent similar disruptions.”
The association has also called on the NUC to facilitate an immediate arrangement allowing stranded SLT university graduates to register and begin their service while they work on obtaining the certification later.
