The Anambra State Government has announced a ban on the activities of condemned iron scavengers, also known as “ndi akpakara” or “Iron Kwandem”, effective immediately. The decision comes after the scavengers’ nefarious activities have become a nuisance to society, stealing metal objects from public utilities, private properties, and even vandalizing critical infrastructure.
According to a statement by the Commissioner for Information, Paul Nwosu, the scavengers’ actions have adversely affected the economy of the state and the country at large. The government has warned that anyone caught doing business with the scavengers will be arrested and prosecuted for receiving stolen property.
The government has differentiated between the illegal condemned iron scavengers and legitimate scrap metal dealers, who will be registered and certified by the Ministry of Environment to continue their business without hindrances.
The OCHA and SASA brigades have been tasked with enforcing the ban and arresting any condemned iron scavengers found operating in the state. Citizens are urged to report any activities of the scavengers to the authorities for immediate action.
This move is seen as a step towards maintaining law and order in the state and protecting public and private properties from theft and vandalism.
