In a recent statement, controversial activist and former militant leader, Asari Dokubo, reiterated his stance on the Igbo identity of the Ikwerre people, dismissing claims of Benin heritage often associated with the group. Asari, who has consistently embraced his Igbo roots, stated:

“I am not saying this to despise anybody, but rather, I am stating the truth: Ikwerre people are Igbo. There’s nothing Benin in Ikwerre.”

Asari went further to emphasize that he himself, along with many Ijaw people, shares this Igbo heritage, citing his own lineage.

“My great-grandfather is from Abam in Abia State. I have never denied my Igbo heritage. Ikwerre people should stop deceiving themselves, because those of us in Rivers know that they are Igbo.”

Asari’s comments are likely to reignite the long-standing debate over the ethnic identity of the Ikwerre people, a topic that has seen divided opinions, especially within Rivers State.
