Minister of Works, David Umahi Responds to Criticism from House Committee Chairman

David Umahi

The Honourable Minister of Works, Sen. Engr. Nweze David Umahi, has issued a strong rebuttal to recent comments made by Hon. Engr. Aderemi Abasi Oseni, Chairman of the House Committee on FERMA, regarding the state of federal roads in Nigeria. The Minister described the remarks as misguided, self-serving, and part of a broader campaign by certain contractors against the Federal Ministry of Works.

In a statement released after a news conference, the Minister emphasized that the criticisms overlook the significant road infrastructure deficits inherited from previous administrations, which number over 2,600 projects with a total estimated cost of N13 trillion. He noted that the current administration has made considerable strides in addressing these challenges, despite limited resources.

“To suggest that I have failed in my duties is both unfounded and disrespectful,” said the Minister. He pointed out that his ministry is dedicated to managing inherited projects effectively, with more than 90% of allocated funds aimed at sustaining ongoing projects.

The Minister also criticized the approach taken by Hon. Oseni, stating that it undermines the integrity of the legislative process and fails to recognize the complexities involved in road construction. He remarked, “Road projects that have endured for decades cannot be resolved overnight.”

He concluded by highlighting the administration’s commitment to transparency and collaboration with relevant legislative bodies, urging a more constructive dialogue on the pressing issues surrounding Nigeria’s road infrastructure.
