Former presidential candidate Peter Obi expressed his frustration over the deplorable condition of Nigerian roads during his attempt to attend the burial of Mrs. Ebaidebheki Esakhaigbe, mother of his friend Gen. Cecil Esekhaigbe, in Esan Central, Edo State.

Obi, who set out early in the morning, aimed to join the mourning family but faced significant obstacles due to poorly maintained roads. Opting to avoid the previously troublesome route through Benin, he chose to travel via Agbor. However, he encountered severe road conditions, with parts nearly impassable, and eventually found himself stuck in gridlock caused by a broken-down trailer.

After further attempts to reach his destination via Ugoneki Road also failed due to the road’s poor state, Obi was unable to attend the burial. Despite this setback, he extended his prayers to Gen. Cecil and his family.

In a heartfelt message, Obi called on political leaders at all levels to prioritize the maintenance and rehabilitation of existing roads and infrastructure. He urged them to shift focus from new, often uncompleted projects, to enhancing the travel experience for all Nigerians.

Obi concluded with a vision for a future where Nigerians can travel freely and safely on well-maintained roads, emphasizing that “New Nigeria is possible.”
