Enugu State Governor, Peter Mbah, today paid tribute to the late Dr. Ogbonnaya Onu, the former governor of the old Abia State, during the funeral ceremony held in his hometown of Uburu, Ohaozara Local Government Area in Ebonyi State.
Dr. Onu, who passed away recently, was hailed as a distinguished academic, politician, and public administrator. As the first elected governor of the old Abia State, Dr. Onu’s tenure was marked by patriotism and enduring legacies. He also served as the first chairman of the Conference of Nigerian Elected Governors and made significant contributions to Nigeria’s democratic progress.
In his remarks, Governor Mbah described Dr. Onu as a visionary leader who helped shape the nation’s political and scientific landscape. His tenure as Minister of Science, Technology, and Innovation saw advancements that strengthened Nigeria’s scientific and technological foundations.
“The passing of Dr. Onu has left a significant void in our political landscape, but his legacy of purposeful leadership will continue to inspire us all,” Governor Mbah said. He extended his deepest condolences to the family of the late statesman, as well as to the governments and people of Abia and Ebonyi states.
Governor Mbah concluded his tribute with prayers for the peaceful repose of Dr. Onu’s soul. “May his soul rest in peace. Amen,” he added.
Dr. Ogbonnaya Onu’s death marks the loss of a prominent figure whose impact spanned several decades of public service.
