Constitution Review: Kalu Says Exercise Aims At Strengthening LGs. Judiciary, Electoral Process

The Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives and Chairman of the Constitution Review Committee, Hon Benjamin Kalu, has emphasized that the ongoing constitutional review focuses on strengthening local governments, improving the judiciary, enhancing electoral processes, and addressing security challenges.

Speaking during a committee meeting, Kalu outlined additional priorities, including power devolution, gender equality, fiscal reforms, and human rights.
He stressed the importance of local government autonomy, judicial independence, and a localized security framework to safeguard lives and property. The review also seeks to promote gender equity, ensuring fair representation of women in governance.

Kalu highlighted the committee’s goals to enhance fiscal responsibility, ensure equitable revenue allocation, and strengthen fundamental rights protections in alignment with Nigerians’ aspirations.
He pointed to progress made, including engagements with the Nigeria Governors’ Forum and the Southwest Zonal Conference of Speakers, as evidence of the committee’s commitment to inclusivity and consensus-building.

The House is organizing a National Dialogue on Local Government and Constitution Amendment on December 2, 2024, in Abuja, to consolidate strategies for a robust local government framework. Additional public engagements on tax reforms and political party contributions to the amendment process are also planned.

Kalu however urged all stakeholders to remain committed to strengthening Nigeria’s democracy, deepening federalism, and fostering national unity and prosperity.
