BREAKING: PDP Expels Hon. Ikenga Ugochinyere Over Anti-Party Activities

Hon. Ikenga Ugochinyere

In a significant political development, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has expelled Hon. Ikenga Imo Ugochinyere, the lawmaker representing the Ideato North/Ideato South Federal Constituency of Imo State and spokesperson for the Coalition of United Political Parties (CUPP). The expulsion, which takes effect immediately, follows allegations of gross indiscipline, insubordination, and various anti-party activities.

The decision was conveyed by the Ideato Local Government Area (LGA) chapter of the PDP through a letter dated December 5, 2024, addressed to the state chairman of the party. The letter, signed by LGA Chairman Hon. ThankGod Okeke and Secretary Onyebuchi Umeh, was based on a disciplinary report from a committee that had investigated Ugochinyere’s actions.

The disciplinary process began after Ugochinyere was suspended on October 14, 2024, by the Umuopia/Umukegwu ward due to his failure to attend multiple meetings, despite several invitations. His suspension was escalated following the findings of the disciplinary committee, which concluded that Ugochinyere violated key sections of the PDP constitution.

Among the charges leading to his expulsion were:

  1. Non-participation in Party Activities: Ugochinyere was found guilty of failing to attend meetings or engage in party activities for an extended period, breaching Section 58(1)(e) of the PDP Constitution.
  2. Unauthorized Publicity: He was accused of publicizing internal party disputes, in violation of Section 58(1)(i), further straining party unity.
  3. Establishing Parallel Party Structures: The committee found that Ugochinyere had set up parallel structures at the ward, LGA, and national levels, undermining the party’s organizational integrity.
  4. Derogatory Statements Against Party Leaders: Ugochinyere’s public criticisms of the party and its leaders were seen as bringing the PDP into disrepute.

In light of these violations, the Ideato North LGA Executive Committee, during a meeting on December 5, 2024, adopted the disciplinary committee’s report and unanimously agreed to expel Ugochinyere from the party.

The expulsion marks a significant fallout in Imo State politics and within the PDP, with the party emphasizing that Ugochinyere’s actions had harmed both the party’s internal cohesion and its public image. The PDP’s decision highlights its commitment to maintaining discipline and unity within its ranks, particularly in the lead-up to future elections.

Ugochinyere’s expulsion has raised eyebrows, particularly given his prominent role in the opposition coalition and his influence as a federal lawmaker. It remains to be seen how this development will affect the political landscape in the region, as well as the broader relationship between the PDP and opposition factions in Imo State.
