The Former Governor of Enugu State, Rt. Hon. Ifeanyi Lawrence Ugwuanyi, has received an award of excellence as a disability champion for his numerous and remarkable contributions towards the welfare of the persons with disability community.
The Former Governor, who received this award recently through the Enugu State chapter of the Joint National Association of Persons with Disabilities (JONAPWD), was also praised for ensuring that the disability bill was passed into law, which has enhanced the well-being of persons living with disabilities in the state.
Presenting the award to the former Governor, the Enugu State Chairman of the organization, Mr. Onyebuchi Mbah , said it is a way of thanking the former Governor and lawmaker for his numerous welfare packages towards them, which include the passing of the disability bill into law. He highlighted that this singular achievement has brought significant changes to the lives of persons living with disabilities in Enugu State, ensuring their inclusion in governance and access to critical social services.
He further stated that the former Governor’s administration prioritized the rights of persons with disabilities, providing not just legal backing but also creating an enabling environment for their voices to be heard.
Mr. Mbah expressed hope that this act of kindness and inclusion would inspire other leaders to adopt similar measures in their states.
Receiving the award on behalf of the immediate past Governor, Ambassador Amaka Nweke, conveyed Rt Hon Ifeanyi Lawrence Ugwuanyi’s gratitude.
She appreciated JONAPWD for the recognition and reiterated Ugwuanyi’s commitment to supporting the welfare and inclusion of persons with disabilities. He acknowledged the resilience of the disability community and noted that their contributions to society should never be underestimated.
Ugwuanyi also stated that this award serves as a motivation for him to continue advocating for the rights of marginalized groups, both as a former Governor and as a public servant. He encouraged stakeholders and policymakers to see persons with disabilities as vital contributors to societal development and to adopt policies that foster their growth and inclusion.
