The Anambra State Commissioner of Police, CP Nnaghe Obono Itam, has visited victims of the tragic stampede that occurred on December 21, 2024, in Okija, Ihiala Local Government Area. The incident claimed the lives of 22 individuals, while several others sustained injuries.
During his visit to the hospital where the injured are receiving treatment, CP Itam expressed deep sorrow over the loss of lives and extended his condolences to the families and friends of the deceased. He also wished the injured victims a speedy recovery.
“The investigation into the unfortunate incident is still ongoing,” the CP stated, emphasizing the commitment of the Anambra State Police Command to uncover the circumstances that led to the tragedy.
In his remarks, SP Tochukwu Ikenga, the Police Public Relations Officer, reiterated the Police Command’s dedication to ensuring the safety and well-being of Anambra residents. He assured the public of the command’s commitment to crime prevention, effective emergency response, and fostering a sense of security within the community.
The tragic event has left the Okija community and the state at large in mourning as authorities continue their efforts to provide support and seek answers.
