Former Rivers State governor and distinguished military figure, Major General Godwin Osagie Abbe (Rtd.), has passed away in Abuja following a prolonged illness, as reported by News Week Nigeria.
Abbe, who was widely recognized for his service to Nigeria, served as the Minister of Defence and Interior, and also held the position of military governor in both Akwa Ibom and Rivers States during his distinguished career.
Born on January 10, 1949, Abbe’s career was marked by numerous accomplishments in both the military and public service.
He enlisted in the Nigerian Army in 1967 and steadily rose through the ranks, taking on significant roles such as Battalion Commander, General Officer Commanding the 2nd Division, and Commander of the National War College. His expertise and leadership extended beyond the military, as he also contributed to Nigeria’s political development as a minister in the administration of the late President Umaru Musa Yar’Adua.
Throughout his life, Abbe was honored with various national and international military decorations in recognition of his service. An avid sportsman with a passion for squash, hunting, and masonry, he was preparing to celebrate his 76th birthday next month.
His passing marks the loss of a respected figure whose impact on Nigeria’s military and political history will not be forgotten.
