Governor Mohammed Bago: Transforming Niger State in Less Than Two Years

Since his inauguration on May 29, 2023, Governor Mohammed Umaru Bago has embarked on a mission to build a #NewNiger, achieving significant milestones across key sectors in less than two years.

Infrastructure Development

The administration is revolutionizing road infrastructure, with over 1,283.40km of federal and state roads under construction or rehabilitation. Key projects include the dualization of Minna-Bida Road (82km), Suleja-Minna Road (101km), and Minna Township Roads (202.40km). Bridges, drainages, and ring roads across 25 LGAs are also in progress, ensuring better connectivity and movement of goods and services.

Housing and Structural Projects

Major projects include the conversion of Shiroro Hotel into the Ibrahim Babangida University Teaching Hospital, construction of an international gold market, and the ongoing development of a 5-star hotel in Minna.

Power and Renewable Energy

The government has distributed 200 transformers, overhauled 600, and constructed a 10MVA substation in Lapai. The Niger State Power Sector Law 2024 was signed to enhance energy reforms, alongside settling a ₦1 billion debt to AEDC.

Education

The administration has established Abdulkadir Kure University, Abdulsalam University of Agriculture Climate Change, and Abubakar Imam University of Science and Innovation. With scholarships for 1,000 students and investment in skills acquisition, Governor Bago is committed to improving education access and quality.

Healthcare

Over 1,000 health workers have been recruited, and 100 primary healthcare centers constructed or upgraded. Efforts also include expanding the Central Medical Store and equipping facilities like the IBB Specialist Hospital in Minna.

Agriculture and Food Security

Niger State has launched an agricultural mechanization revolution, procuring 1,000 tractors and other equipment. Investments in grain production and youth empowerment programs aim to boost food security and economic growth.

Economic Growth and Security

The administration has improved Internally Generated Revenue (IGR) and secured $684 million in investments for agro-industrial processing zones. Security efforts include operational vehicles for agencies and involving traditional institutions in peacebuilding.

Social Welfare

Through humanitarian initiatives, palliatives, and empowerment programs, the government supports widows, elderly citizens, and internally displaced persons.

Good Governance and Budget Performance

Governor Bago’s inclusive leadership style has ensured synergy across government arms and regular payments to civil servants. With a 68.88% budget performance for 2024, the ₦1.558 trillion 2025 budget will focus on security, food security, health, education, and environmental sustainability.

In less than two years, Governor Mohammed Umaru Bago’s administration has laid the foundation for a prosperous and inclusive Niger State, earning recognition as a beacon of development in Nigeria.
