A devastating fire broke out in the early hours of Thursday, destroying over 100 shops at the Kantamanto market in Accra. The blaze, which started around 1:00 AM, caused significant damage to property but fortunately claimed no lives.
The Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS) reported that 13 fire trucks were dispatched from various parts of Accra to combat the inferno. The fire, located near the Ghana Commercial Bank, was eventually brought under control after several hours of intense firefighting efforts.
Eyewitnesses described the scene as chaotic, with traders frantically trying to salvage what they could from their shops. “We heard shouting and saw flames spreading quickly,” one shop owner recounted. “By the time the fire service arrived, most of our goods were already gone.”
The cause of the fire remains unknown, but investigations are underway to determine its origin. Meanwhile, affected traders are counting their losses, with many appealing for government intervention to support their recovery.
