Lionel Messi has been honored with the prestigious Presidential Medal of Freedom by the United States President, recognizing his unparalleled achievements in the world of football and his philanthropic work. Although Messi was unable to attend the ceremony on January 4, 2025, due to a prior commitment, the White House issued a statement commending the football legend.
The White House described Messi as “the most decorated player in the history of professional football” and emphasized his global impact through his support of children’s health and education programs via his Leo Messi Foundation, as well as his role as a UNICEF Goodwill Ambassador.
In a letter addressed to the President, Messi expressed his gratitude for the honor. “It’s a great honor to receive this recognition. I’m truly grateful for it,” Messi said. “Unfortunately, I’ve a prior commitment, and I’ve not been able to attend the ceremony at the White House on January 4.”
The football icon further stated his willingness to receive the award at a future date, saying, “I would be open to meeting to receive the award at another time when I’m back in the United States.”
