House of Reps Slams Interior Minister, Customs, Immigration Chiefs Over Hearing Absence

House of Reps

The House of Representatives has expressed displeasure over the absence of the Minister of Interior, the Comptroller General of Customs, and the Comptroller General of Immigration at an investigative hearing on border security and trade moderation.

The hearing, organized by the House joint committees on Customs and Excise, Interior, and Legislative Compliance, aimed to explore the adoption of modern technology to enhance border security and examine the trade moderation project of the Nigeria Customs Service.

During the session on Monday, Hon Olumide Osoba, citing Section 88 of the Constitution, raised a point of order to criticize the failure of the invited officials to appear, noting that only representatives were sent in their place. In response, the Chairman of the House Committee on Customs, Hon Leke Abejide, announced that the meeting was adjourned indefinitely.

He, however, warned that if the officials fail to appear on a rescheduled date, the committee would invoke all legal measures at its disposal to ensure compliance. Additionally, another committee member, Hon Awaji-Inombek Abiante, suggested that if the executives fail to appear at the next sitting, steps should be taken to recommend their replacement.
