The Catholic Diocese of Warri, Delta State, has suspended Rev. Fr. Daniel Okanatotor Oghenerukevwe following allegations of his secret marriage to Ms. Dora Chichah in the United States.

In a statement titled “Decree of Suspension,” dated January 16, 2025, and signed by Bishop Anthony Ovayero Ewherido and Very Rev. Fr. Clement Abobo, the Diocese confirmed that the marriage took place on December 29, 2024, at Streams of Joy Church in Dallas, USA. This act, documented in viral videos, contravenes Catholic Church laws.

The statement read: “Rev. Fr. Daniel Okanatotor Oghenerukevwe has incurred a Latae Sententiae suspension under Canon 1394 §1. He is suspended from exercising sacred ministry effective immediately.”

The Diocese noted that Fr. Oghenerukevwe had requested release from priestly duties on November 30, 2024. However, the required canonical processes were incomplete when he proceeded with the marriage. Attempts to obtain necessary documentation were reportedly ignored.

As per Canon 1333, Fr. Oghenerukevwe is barred from presenting himself as a priest of the Diocese. He may petition for the suspension’s revocation or amendment by demonstrating willingness to reform and comply with Church directives.

“May God grant him the grace to reflect and reconcile,” the statement concluded, emphasizing the Church’s commitment to its doctrines while allowing accountability and redemption.
