The Ohanaeze Ndigbo, the apex Igbo socio-cultural organization, has expressed skepticism over former Vice President Atiku Abubakar’s recent declarations of supporting Peter Obi in the 2027 presidential election. In a statement signed by Secretary-General Mazi Okechukwu Isiguzoro, the group dismissed Atiku’s claims as a ruse, citing his past failures to fulfill promises made to the Igbo people.

Ohanaeze Ndigbo recalled Atiku’s unsuccessful presidential bid in 2007, where he promised to support Igbo interests but failed to deliver. They also pointed out his selection of Peter Obi as a running mate in 2019, which was seen as a political move rather than a genuine commitment to the Southeast region.

The group further criticized Atiku’s alleged interference in the PDP’s zoning formula for the 2023 presidential candidate selection, which was expected to favor the Southeast. They warned that his actions often fall short of genuine commitment to Igbo causes.

Mazi Okechukwu Isiguzoro emphasized that after 17 years of perceived political deceit and betrayals, the assurances and pledges made by Atiku Abubakar hold little weight among the Igbo Nation. He urged caution and discernment in engaging with political figures like Atiku Abubakar, emphasizing the importance of learning from past follies and avoiding recurring deceptions.
