The Senate has requested that the Federal Government honor the late Pa Taiwo Akinkunmi, the designer of the Nigerian national flag, who recently passed away in Ibadan, Oyo State.
The resolution of the Red Chamber was made in response to a motion presented by Senator Sharafadeen Alli (APC, Oyo South) during Tuesday’s plenary, under the Point of Order on a matter of national importance.
Akinkunmi, who was a retired civil servant and electrical engineer, passed away on August 29 at the age of 89.
Though he was originally from Abeokuta, the capital of Ogun State, he lived his life in Ibadan.
Sen. Alli, in presenting his motion, urged for the immortalization of the national flag designer in recognition of his accomplishments and contributions to the country’s development.
Specifically, the lawmaker requested that the Federal Government rename a national monument after the late Akinkunmi and establish a historical initiative document to record the achievements and to honor the late Pa Taiwo Akinkunmi, the designer of Nigeria’s national flag who recently passed away in Ibadan, Oyo State.
Senator Sadiq Umar, a member of the APC from Kwara North, supported and emphasized the importance of immortalizing the late Akinkunmi with a national honor.
Senator Umar believed that it was crucial for the younger generation to recognize the accomplishments and contributions of the national flag designer to the development of the country.
All the senators who participated in the discussion emphasized that the Federal Government should pay tribute to the late Akinkunmi.
Senate President Godswill Akpabio, in his concluding remarks, instructed the members of the upper legislative chamber to observe a moment of silence to honor the designer of thr national Umar flag.
