Tragedy struck the Assam government and police department as Shiladitya Chetia, a senior Indian Police Service (IPS) officer and secretary of the home and political department, died by suicide shortly after his wife’s passing.
According to officials, Chetia, 55, shot himself with his service revolver in the hospital’s ICU where his wife, who had been battling cancer, had succumbed to the disease just hours earlier.
Chetia, a respected and experienced officer, was on leave to care for his ailing wife. His sudden and shocking death has sent shockwaves through the state’s police force and government, with many colleagues and officials expressing condolences and mourning the loss.
