A devastating building collapse occurred at the Ekeoyibo market in Amawbia, Awka, on Thursday, July 4, 2024, at approximately 12:40 pm. The two-story building, which was still under construction, housed traders and shop owners, and its sudden collapse trapped an unknown number of people under the debris.

In response to the distress call, police operatives swiftly arrived at the scene and rescued two victims, who were rushed to the hospital for medical attention. The rescue operation is still ongoing, with the Deputy Commissioner of Police in charge of Operations leading the effort.

The Commissioner of Police, CP Nnaghe Obono Itam, has cordoned off the area to ensure the safety of the public and emergency responders. The police are working tirelessly to search for survivors amidst the rubble.

The cause of the building collapse is yet to be determined, but eyewitnesses suggest that the structure may have been weakened by substandard construction materials.
