A political analyst has raised concerns over the neglect of local government elections in Nigeria, stating that it poses a significant threat to the country’s democratic system. The analyst noted that since the return to democracy in 1999, only a few states have conducted local government elections, with most states refusing to do so.
The analyst pointed out that the failure to conduct local government elections is a violation of Section 7(1) of the 1999 Constitution, which guarantees democratically elected local government councils across the country. The lack of elected local government councils has given state governments absolute control over local government machinery, undermining the principles of democracy.
