In a recent interview, renowned Nigerian businessman and socialite, Obinna Oyiegbu, popularly known as Obi Cubana, disclosed a somber family history that has shaped his outlook on life. Speaking with media personality Chude Jideonwu, Obi Cubana revealed that no member of his family has ever lived to celebrate their 80th birthday—a pattern he described as a generational jinx.
According to Obi Cubana, this tragic trend has persisted for generations, with his father passing away at 66, his grandmother at 75, and his grandfather at 78. The jinx continued with his late mother, who, despite their hopes and prayers, died at the age of 79.
“In my family, nobody has lived up to 80 years, and I’m saying this for the first time,” Obi Cubana shared. He went on to explain that the family had hoped his mother would be the one to break the cycle, even starting to save up for the grand celebration they planned to host in her honour. Unfortunately, their dreams were cut short when she passed away on December 31 2020, just a few months shy of her 80th birthday.
Reflecting on her life, Obi Cubana said, “She tried at 79 and a half, so we brought everything together to celebrate her. At least she tried and almost broke the jinx. That was why we went all out for the burial.”
The revelation offers a glimpse into the personal motivations behind the extravagant funeral ceremony Obi Cubana organized for his late mother, an event that captured the attention of the nation.
