2027: Labour Party Chairman, Julius Abure, Denies Automatic Tickets to Peter Obi and Alex Otti

Embattled Labour Party chairman Julius Abure says no more automatic tickets for Peter Obi and Alex Otti; Says no governor can remove him from office

The crisis engulfing the Labour Party seems to be taking a new dimension after the National Executive committee led by Julius Abure said it will deny automatic tickets to Peter Obi, its 2023 presidential flag bearer and Alex Otti, the party’s only sitting governor.

Abure described the meeting led by Otti and Obi at Abia state as a “betrayal” and “divisionary,” aimed at installing “new leadership” without the National Executive Council’s authority or consent.

The move by the Abure led NEC comes after Alex Otti and Peter Obi organized a party stakeholders meeting on Abia last week calling for a new convention to elect new party leaders as Abure’s tenure has expired and his NEC was not recognized by INEC.

On Monday, following a meeting by the Abure led NEC, the committee changed its previous stance regarding the automatic tickets for Peter Obi and Alex Otti for the 2027 elections. The NEC has now announced that these nominations will be open to all candidates.
