Governor Umar Namadi of Jigawa State has come under criticism for prioritizing the construction of mosques and religious centers at the expense of pressing developmental challenges in the state. Reports reveal that the governor spent N1.5 billion in just three months on religious projects, despite the state grappling with over 820,000 out-of-school children — one of the highest in the country.
The governor, known for opposing the Tax Reform Bills aimed at improving state revenue, has argued that the reforms would harm the Northern economy. Critics, however, claim that Namadi’s focus on religious infrastructure over education and critical development undermines efforts to address the region’s economic and social challenges.
“Instead of addressing the education crisis, he is pouring money into projects that don’t directly benefit the masses,” a local activist remarked.
