Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Barr. Ezenwo Nyesom Wike, on Thursday, December 12, 2024, handed over 50 new operational vehicles to security agencies in the FCT to enhance the fight against insecurity. Speaking at the presentation ceremony, Wike emphasized that security remains a top priority of President Bola Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda.
Wike revealed that the vehicles were procured through provisions made in the FCT budget by the National Assembly. He also highlighted that an additional 50 vehicles were distributed earlier this year, bringing the total to 100. Addressing the security agencies, Wike urged them to use the vehicles proactively, saying, “We must not give space. We must take the war to criminals and let them know we are serious, especially during this festive season.”
The Minister commended the improvement in FCT’s security, including a reduction in kidnappings in rural areas. He also announced the construction of 12 police divisions across the six Area Councils, set to be completed by April 2025.
Wike identified challenges such as difficult terrain and limited access roads in rural areas but assured residents that ongoing infrastructure development would enhance security operations. He urged residents to support security agencies by reporting suspicious activities.
Addressing recent accusations of land grabbing, Wike dismissed the claims as baseless, declaring that the FCT Administration would continue correcting land administration anomalies. “We will stop anyone who thinks they can take government land without approval. No amount of blackmail will deter us,” he stated.
Wike also warned ground rent and land tax defaulters, threatening to revoke titles if payments were not made. He stressed that the FCT Administration depends on internally generated revenue to provide infrastructure and pay salaries, as its federal allocation is insufficient.
“You own property, pay your ground rent. You won’t pay, but you say Wike is working. Will he work with his blood?” the Minister asked, reaffirming his commitment to accountability and progress in the FCT.
