The Imo State Council of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) has issued a disclaimer, cautioning the public about the activities of individuals parading themselves as journalists and falsely claiming affiliation with the union.
In a press release signed by the NUJ Chairman, Comrade Ifeanyi Nwanguma, the council clarified that it is not organizing any Press Week or get-together event this year. The statement warned that anyone engaging with individuals or groups hosting such events does so at their own risk, as the NUJ will not be held responsible for fraudulent activities perpetrated under the guise of the union.
The NUJ highlighted that it successfully hosted the 2024 National Triennial Delegates Conference from November 26 to 28, making it impossible to hold a Press Week, in accordance with the union’s operational guidelines. Additionally, the council expressed its current focus on mourning the loss of its Vice Chairman, Comrade Emmanuel Odibo, and preparing for his burial.
“We urge the public to disregard and remain cautious of any group claiming to be NUJ members organizing a Press Week or any form of get-together,” the statement read.
The council emphasized that this notice serves as a caveat to protect the public from fraudulent schemes and assured its commitment to transparency and accountability.
