At least 20 soldiers sustained serious injuries after a speeding vehicle rammed into them during a morning drill outside Myoung Barracks in the Yaba area of Lagos on Friday.
The car, reportedly moving at full speed, had three occupants at the time of the incident. According to eyewitness accounts from soldiers at the barracks, the driver was suspected to be inebriated.
One of the men in the vehicle fled the scene immediately, while the remaining two were apprehended and severely beaten by enraged soldiers. A battered Toyota car believed to be involved in the crash was later seen parked inside the barracks as soldiers discussed the incident in hushed tones.
Military sources confirmed that the injured soldiers are currently receiving treatment at the military hospital within the barracks. Some were seen limping outside the facility, while a crowd of uniformed personnel gathered nearby.
It remains unclear if any fatalities occurred, as military officials have yet to confirm the full extent of casualties. Senior officers at the barracks declined to comment, directing all inquiries to military headquarters.
Attempts to reach Onyema Nwachukwu, the Nigerian Army spokesperson, for an official statement were unsuccessful, as he did not respond to calls or text messages at the time of this report.
